Stabilizing the hexagonal close packed structure of hard spheres with polymers: Phase diagram, structure, and dynamics.

چکیده
We study the phase behaviour of a binary mixture of colloidal hard spheres and freely jointed chains of beads using Monte Carlo simulations. Recently Panagiotopoulos and co-workers predicted [Nat. Commun. 5, 4472 (2014)] that the hexagonal close packed (HCP) structure of hard spheres can be stabilized in such a mixture due to the interplay between polymer and the void structure in the crystal phase. Their predictions were based on estimates of the free-energy penalty for adding a single hard polymer chain in the HCP and the competing face centered cubic (FCC) phase. Here we calculate the phase diagram using free-energy calculations of the full binary mixture and find a broad fluid-solid coexistence region and a metastable gas-liquid coexistence region. For the colloid-monomer size ratio considered in this work, we find that the HCP phase is only stable in a small window at relatively high polymer reservoir packing fractions, where the coexisting HCP phase is nearly close packed. Additionally we investigate the structure and dynamic behaviour of these mixtures.

Phase diagram of dipolar hard and soft spheres: manipulation of colloidal crystal structures by an external field.
Phase diagrams of hard and soft spheres with a fixed dipole moment are determined by calculating the Helmholtz free energy using simulations. The pair potential is given by a dipole-dipole interaction plus a hard-core and a repulsive Yukawa potential for soft spheres. Our system models colloids in an external electric or magnetic field, with hard spheres corresponding to uncharged and soft sphe...

We study the phase behavior of hard and soft spheres with a fixed dipole moment using Monte Carlo simulations. The spheres interact via a pair potential that is a sum of a hard-core Yukawa (or screened-Coulomb) repulsion and a dipole-dipole interaction. The system can be used to model colloids in an external electric or magnetic field. Two cases are considered: (i) colloids without charge (or d...
متن کاملMost stable structure for hard spheres.
The hard sphere model is known to show a liquid-solid phase transition, with the solid expected to be either face centered cubic or hexagonal close packed. The differences in free energy of the two structures are very small and various attempts have been made to determine which structure is the more stable. We contrast the different approaches and extend one.
متن کاملOn the stability of orientationally disordered crystal structures of colloidal hard dumbbells
We study the stability of orientationally disordered crystal phases in a suspension of colloidal hard dumbbells using Monte Carlo simulations. For dumbbell bond length L/σ < 0.4 with L the separation of the two spheres of the dumbbell and σ the diameter of the spheres, we determine the difference in Helmholtz free energy of a plastic crystal with a hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) and a face-center...
